. . . . The Urban Center skyline grew up almost entirely during the early and mid-1980s, a child of the real estate boom whose hold was particularly strong on the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Like much commercial real estate development of that era, it was fueled largely by the advent of equity financing and President Ronald Reagan's controversial economic policies.

When Reagan took office in 1981, the U.S. economy was suffering from high inflation rates, high interest rates and high federal budget deficits. That same year he put a cornerstone of "Reaganomics" into place: generous tax shelters for commercial real estate. Investors would now be able to depreciate commercial property over only 15 years, often saving more in taxes than the cost of the debt service on their real assets. . . .

          Community safeguards
          Member advocacy and communications
